專案於 2023 年 7 月 24 日正式上線,2024 年 10 月 17 日在舊金山「A New World」活動上宣布由 Worldcoin 更名為 World,同場推出運行於 OP Stack 的 Layer 2(L2)區塊鏈 World Chain,接入 Optimism Superchain 並以 ETH 作為原生 gas 代幣。
1. World ID 與 proof of personhood(Orb 虹膜掃描與 iris code)
2. World Chain(OP Stack L2、
- World App 錢包:由 Tools for Humanity 營運的 World App 是首個相容 World Network 的錢包,採自託管模式,私鑰由使用者自行保管。
- 2024/10/17:於舊金山「A New World」活動宣布更名為 World,World Chain 主網上線(OP Stack L2),並發表新一代 Orb、World ID 3.0 與 World App 3.0。
World Foundation 官方風險揭露頁以 as is(現況)基礎提供 World Network,並聲明不作任何擔保。
World(Worldcoin)
EDPB Decision 1594(2025/2):
- 德國巴伐利亞 BayLDA(2024/12/19):
Communications of the ACM
World(前 Worldcoin,WLD)以 Orb 虹膜掃描產生 iris code、建立 World ID 作為 proof of personhood,並運行於 OP Stack 的 L2 區塊鏈 World Chain,代幣採真人驗證領取模式。

What is Worldcoin / World (WLD)? A Proof-of-Personhood Identity and Token Network Built on Iris Scanning
World (formerly Worldcoin, WLD) is a project centred on proof of personhood. Its premise is that as generative AI makes humans and bots harder to tell apart, each person needs a way to prove they are a unique, real human. Users are scanned by a purpose-built device called the Orb, which converts the texture of the iris into an iris code and uses it to generate a World ID — a credential the project describes as an anonymous way to prove one is a real human, distinct from any existing account. The project is developed by Tools for Humanity (TFH), whose co-founders include OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Alex Blania, and its network and token affairs are stewarded by the World Foundation. WLD is the network’s native token.
The project launched on 24 July 2023. On 17 October 2024, at the “A New World” event in San Francisco, it rebranded from Worldcoin to World and unveiled World Chain, a Layer 2 (L2) blockchain built on the OP Stack, connected to the Optimism Superchain and using ETH as its native gas token. Token distribution follows a verify-to-claim model: users who complete Orb verification can claim an amount of WLD. WLD distribution was initially unavailable in the United States; only in late April to early May 2025 did the project open World ID verification and WLD claiming in six cities — Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville and San Francisco — with verified users able to claim 16 WLD.
Core features of WLD
1. World ID and proof of personhood (Orb iris scanning and iris code)
World ID is the project’s identity foundation. According to Tools for Humanity, the Orb first uses sensors to confirm a real human is present, then captures and processes a series of iris images to create an iris code — a digital representation of the iris texture — used to verify the person is unique and has not registered a World ID before. The project positions World ID as an “anonymous” proof-of-human credential, holding that a person can anonymously prove they are real on a platform such as X to counter bots.
On the data-processing side, World introduced an open-source Secure Multi-Party Computation (SMPC) system in 2024, stating that iris codes can be encrypted into secret shares distributed across multiple parties and matched without decryption. The project relies on this to argue that processed iris codes are “privacy-preserving.” Whether that anonymisation claim holds has become the crux of subsequent regulatory and academic disputes (see “Recent controversies”).
2. World Chain (OP Stack L2, block space designed for real humans)
World Chain is a Layer 2 rollup built on the OP Stack and secured by Ethereum, and is a member of the Optimism Superchain, using ETH as its native gas token. According to World’s developer documentation, World Chain differs from other L2s by granting two things to World ID–verified humans: priority inclusion of their transactions via a Priority Blockspace for Humans (PBH) mechanism, and a gas allowance so verified humans can transact with a degree of free block space. The project states this gas allowance is initially funded by the project, with the goal of progressive decentralisation handing the parameter to World governance.
3. WLD distribution and utility (claim by verified users, ecosystem incentives, governance)
WLD’s initial distribution centres on verified humans: after completing Orb verification, users claim tokens through a self-hosted wallet in World App. According to World Foundation documentation, WLD is expected to serve as a payment means within the network and to let holders participate in governing World Network toward decentralisation. The Foundation also states that WLD conveys no ownership, equity or dividend rights in World or any other legal entity.
What is WLD used for?
- In-ecosystem payments: WLD is positioned as a token usable for payments within World Network, held and transferred in the World App wallet.
- Governance participation: where available, WLD holders can take part in World Network governance decisions, which the project frames as a mechanism toward decentralisation.
- Verification incentive: users who complete Orb iris verification can claim WLD, as an incentive to grow the proof-of-human network.
- World App wallet: operated by Tools for Humanity, World App is the first World Network–compatible wallet and is self-hosted, with private keys held by the user.
- Staking: as of 24 September 2026, official documentation does not list staking as a core WLD function; any third-party staking services are not official World Foundation mechanisms and carry independently assessed risk.
Milestones and token economics
- 24 July 2023: the Worldcoin project launched, rolling out World ID and Orb iris verification; 500 million WLD were unlocked from the World Community allocation at launch.
- 17 October 2024: at the “A New World” event in San Francisco, the project rebranded to World, launched World Chain mainnet (an OP Stack L2), and unveiled a new-generation Orb, World ID 3.0 and World App 3.0.
- First half of 2025: regulatory action in Spain, Portugal and elsewhere suspended iris-scanning operations in parts of Europe (see controversies).
- Late April–early May 2025: the U.S. market opened for World ID verification and WLD claiming, initially across six cities, with verified users able to claim 16 WLD.
- Supply cap: WLD has a maximum supply of 10 billion (10,000,000,000). The initial allocation was 75% to the World Community and 25% across the Team, TFH investors and a small TFH reserve (per the whitepaper).
- Unlock schedule: according to World’s official blog, about 4.9 billion WLD (49% of total supply) were unlocked as of 10 April 2026, of which roughly 3.3 billion were in circulation. Team and investor allocations unlock daily under an extended schedule running to about July 2028, while the Community allocation is released over a longer horizon of roughly 15 years from the 2023 launch. The project also announced that the WLD unlock rate decreased by about 43% in July 2026.
- Institutional holding: according to CoinGecko, U.S.-listed Eightco Holdings (ORBS.US) is among the publicly disclosed WLD treasury holders, holding 277,222,975 WLD, about 2.772% of total supply (as disclosed on that page).
Market risks and important risk disclosures for WLD
Data as of 24 September 2026, sourced from CoinGecko; prices and market capitalisation fluctuate continuously, so refer to figures at the time of your own query. As of that date, WLD’s market cap was about US$1.49 billion, ranked around #61 on CoinGecko; circulating supply was about 3.65 billion, with total and maximum supply both 10 billion, and a fully diluted valuation (FDV) of about US$4.08 billion. Its all-time high was US$11.74 and all-time low US$0.23, then trading roughly 96.5% below the peak.
- Privacy and security risk of biometric (iris) data:
Claiming WLD is tied to Orb iris scanning, involving highly sensitive biometric data. An iris code cannot be reset like a password once leaked or misused. The World Foundation risk-disclosure page states that if security or data-privacy breaches occur, or there is unauthorised or improper access to or destruction of user data, World Network’s continued operation could be disrupted or terminated, and that this risk is heightened in jurisdictions with stringent data-privacy laws. - Global regulatory sanctions and ban risk:
Orb scanning and iris-code storage have drawn investigations, suspension orders or deletion orders in the EU, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Hong Kong, Kenya and elsewhere (see controversies). Regulatory findings may directly affect whether WLD can be used or obtained in a given region, and may halt local operations. - Large unlocks, supply dilution and concentration among early investors/team:
With a 10 billion maximum supply and only about 49% unlocked (roughly 3.3 billion circulating) as of 10 April 2026, a large volume of tokens remains to be released. Team and TFH-investor allocations keep unlocking until about July 2028, and holdings are relatively concentrated, so ongoing unlocks and selling could create dilution and downward price pressure. - The heavily cautionary nature of the official disclosure itself:
The World Foundation risk-disclosure page provides World Network on an “as is” basis and states that no warranties are made. It expressly states that WLD tokens are not investment products, that there should be no expectation of value, future profit or gain from buying or selling WLD, and that on initial distribution WLD are merely ledger entries with no inherent monetary value. It further states that users should hold no more value in WLD than they are prepared to lose, and should prepare for WLD to never have any value, or to lose all value attributed to it. - Token demand and real-world utility adoption:
WLD’s value depends heavily on actual demand for it as a payment means and for network functions. The disclosure page notes that acceptance of WLD requires sufficient outlets to transfer or spend it, which may not develop at the scale needed to support adoption, and that a significant portion of digital-asset demand has come from speculators. If real-world use and utility of the human network fall short of expectations, token demand may be insufficient. - High price volatility:
The disclosure page notes that crypto-asset prices have historically been highly volatile, and that any market price of WLD may be affected by the broader crypto market, geopolitical or macroeconomic events, lack of adoption, network instability, hacks or regulatory events; published “market” prices for WLD may also be distorted by manipulative activity such as self-dealing or wash trading.
Recent controversies:
World (Worldcoin) markets itself around “anonymity” and “privacy protection,” yet multiple regulators and academics have questioned the gap between that messaging and its actual data processing, and have issued sanctions. The following is stated objectively from verifiable primary and authoritative sources.
- EU EDPB Decision 1594 (February 2025):
The Decision 1594 document published by the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) in February 2025 records that World/Worldcoin, over the period from 24 July 2023 to 14 May 2024, stored iris codes as plain text in a database. This fact stands in direct tension with the project’s public messaging that data is kept anonymously and not in a traceable form. - Germany’s Bavarian BayLDA (19 December 2024):
The Bavarian State Office for Data Protection Supervision (BayLDA) issued a decision on 19 December 2024 finding that the responsible entity breached several GDPR articles, and issued a corrective order requiring it to establish a GDPR-compliant data-deletion procedure, obtain users’ explicit consent for certain processing activities, and delete data records previously collected without a sufficient legal basis, with one month to implement. Spain’s data protection authority (AEPD) participated under the Article 60 cooperation procedure, and the decision confirmed the AEPD’s March 2024 suspension of data processing in Spain. Tools for Humanity said it would appeal, arguing its architecture is “privacy-preserving” and anonymises data so that GDPR data-access (including deletion) rights should not apply; the Bavarian authority told media that enforcement timelines were suspended pending the appeal. - Academic “privacy-washing” critique (ACM, March 2025):
A March 2025 commentary in the Communications of the ACM blog noted that Worldcoin believes SMPC lets it avoid EU data protection law, a belief resting on the assumptions that splitting data into shares and contractually preventing parties from combining them means personal data is not processed. The piece labelled this approach — dressing up practices with privacy-enhancing technologies (PETs) that fall short of the EU anonymisation standard — as privacy-washing, arguing the messaging outpaces the actual level of privacy protection. Related academic work describes overstating the anonymity level of “sanitised” data as anonymity-washing. - Regulatory action in other regions:
Hong Kong’s Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (PCPD) served an enforcement notice on the Worldcoin Foundation on 22 May 2024, directing it to cease collecting iris and facial images from the public using iris-scanning devices in Hong Kong. Spain’s AEPD issued a precautionary measure to stop processing personal data in March 2024; Portugal’s authority also took emergency action to suspend local iris scanning, both citing concern over the indelible capture of children’s data. In Kenya, services were suspended in 2023; the Kenyan High Court ordered the permanent deletion of biometric data collected from Kenyans within seven days in May 2025, and the deletion was completed under the Data Protection Commissioner’s supervision in January 2026. Investigations or suspensions have also occurred in Indonesia, Argentina and elsewhere.
Overall, as of 24 September 2026, World faces continuing scrutiny and litigation under the GDPR and local data-protection laws across multiple jurisdictions, with some sanctions still under appeal or in enforcement. The central regulatory question is whether iris codes and related data constitute legally regulated personal data, and whether users can effectively exercise their right to deletion; this legal characterisation remains unsettled and may continue to affect World Network’s operation and WLD’s availability in various regions.
Summary
World (formerly Worldcoin, WLD) generates iris codes from Orb iris scans to build World ID as proof of personhood, runs on the OP Stack L2 blockchain World Chain, and distributes its token via a verify-to-claim model. Developed by Tools for Humanity and stewarded by the World Foundation, its stated vision is a digital-identity infrastructure that distinguishes real humans in the AI era.
Assessing WLD means holding both its technical positioning and its unsettled risks in view. WLD has a 10 billion supply cap with unlocks still in progress and relatively concentrated early holdings; at the same time, its core biometric data processing has drawn regulatory sanctions and deletion orders in the EU, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Hong Kong and Kenya, and there is a clear gap between the official “anonymous/privacy-preserving” messaging and the findings of regulators and academics. The World Foundation’s own risk-disclosure page provides the network on an “as is” basis, states plainly that WLD is not an investment product and that no value should be expected, and asks users to prepare for the token to reach zero. Any trading decision should rely on market data and official documents at the time of the query, with independent assessment of privacy, regulatory and volatility risk.
